We are often aware of the negative consequences of having an addiction, but its benefits – the real reason we stick with an addiction – can be more difficult to see. What role does the addiction play our lives? How does it help use cope? Addiction usually sticks because of what it gives us, not because of what it takes away.
Using Motivational Interviewing, clients can come to better understand the motivations behind the addictive behaviours causing so much damage to their lives and the lives of those around them.
Once you’ve discovered these roles, you’ll look for other, constructive ways of fulfilling those same goals, and the barriers to putting them into practice. With these alternatives in place, managing an addiction will become much easier, because so many of the triggers for relapse have been removed.
